Without Customers There Is No Business by Monica Wells


One of the difficult aspects of owning or managing a business is gaining new customers and retaining the ones you already have. Customers tend to look at the prices of the products you are selling, the quality of customer service and the cleanliness of the facility. Marketing and promotion is important for any business. Without customers, there isn’t a business.

If you own a business, you need to get people excited about going there. My first real job was in a family owned discount grocery store. Granted the chain didn’t have a very good reputation for cleanliness, but we worked hard to keep our store clean, the quality of customer service high, and the prices of the groceries low. During the opening week, the owners set up a raffle style contest, and each time a customer shopped at our store, they earned an entry into the box. At the end of the week, winners were draw. The grand prize was a new Ford Focus, and two second place prizes were gift cards good towards groceries in the store.

This was a really good way to get people into the store, who weren’t interested otherwise. Once they were in, employees could charm them with our excellent customer service and they were always happy to see the low prices on quality food products. Just getting people to come in and try the store made a big difference in the number of initial loyal customers. For years people would talk about the cool raffle we did, and asked if another was planned.             People like the idea of winning things. It doesn’t always have to be something as big as a car, but coupons or gift cards would fun to win as well!

Selling raffle tickets for nonprofit organizations or food banks is good way to motivate people to donate money as well. People would be more willing to donate more money than they normally would, if they know they have a chance at winning something big while they were helping out the nonprofit organization.

My husband is in the Army and I know that the Family Readiness Group (FRG) does a lot of fundraisers, including selling raffle tickets. It gets people excited, and people have fun going to the functions. It improves the number of people who attend the meetings too, so they can get information that they need. The FRG helps a lot of families deal with and understand Army life, and they need to raise money for some of the stress relieving activities that they sponsor.             

A raffle is also an excellent way to boost morale and create an incentive among employees. Happy employees deliver better customer service, hence making happy loyal customers. They don’t have to be big prizes, just something that shows and appreciation for the great work employees are doing.

If I owned a business, I would use raffle tickets as a motivating technique. Each employee would get a ticket for each time they went out of their way to help a customer or another employee, and we could have a drawing each two week period. Prizes don’t have to be excessive, but even candy bars or gift cards would help to motivate them to excel at their job.
