I’ve been a part of many raffle fundraisers but one that I was most involved with was a 50/50 raffle at my high school. Throughout high school, I helped a few times selling raffle tickets for the AFJROTC program that I was a part of. We would sell before and during football games all the way up to halftime. We would sell raffle tickets for the 50/50 drawing at half time. We would get there before the game started and gather our tickets in a pouch. We would start walking around the stadium looking for people to badger. As we gave out tickets and collected money we would have to go back to the booth and get more. Going to get more was always the best part because we would get to see Mrs. Bigart and Mrs. Peele and maybe even help them count the money. There was always a contest between all the kids helping. We would see how many pouches each person could get through before it was time to stop collecting.
We usually got a good amount of money for both the winner and for our program. Often we would raise around five hundred dollars so we would get two hundred and fifty dollars. One time a man even told us to keep his half and we got all the money, that was a real treat. Many people would buy over twenty tickets throughout the night as we walked by.
The money went toward the counselor’s fund. This was a fund at our school that helped students in need during the holidays. The counselors and social worker would choose who needed help from this fund. Often it would provide a Christmas or Thanksgiving for a student and their family that could not afford it. We also raised money for this fund during the US Golf Open by selling water bottles to people as they came to and from the golf course. This fund was a big deal that many people at our school do not even know about. I’m glad I could be a part of an organization that raised money for this fund.
Being a part of AFJROTC at my high school was the majority of my high school career. Many hours after school with the drill team and color guard. Many hours doing volunteer work out in the community. Many of my favorite memories are from ROTC and being involved with what they were doing. One memory that I love to think about is from the Halloween game my senior year. I was dressed as a pizza and one of the involved parents was a pirate. We were up in the stands gathering money and we were really bringing in the money. People were yelling “hey pizza†or “hey pirate†at us and we were dancing and having a good time. It reminded me that fun can come in all different ways.
