Winning with an Award Winning Raffle by Karen Brown

Winning with an Award Winning Raffle by Karen Brown

Raffles are fun and they are held all the time to conduct fundraisers to benefit different organizations.  Organizations who participate in raffles benefit in different ways depending on their fundraising efforts and the type of organization conducting the raffle.  For example:  Churches conducting a raffle may reach their goal in raising funds, but they may also gain new membership through their efforts.  Another example:  A business may increase their sales by gaining new customers who never heard of their business, but supported the cause in which they were raising funds for.  But there is a right way and a wrong way to hold a raffle.  This essay will propose the best way in which will allow for a maximum on an organization’s returns.

To begin an “Award Winning Raffle,” the organization must first check with the local government regulatory agencies to make sure that organization can legally hold a raffle.  The charitable Raffle Enabling Act allows only “qualified organizations” the opportunity to hold up to two raffles per calendar year (with certain specified restrictions), which includes:

  • Churches
  • Youth Organizations (sports, bands, service)
  • Private Schools
  • Businesses for charitable events
  • College Organizations (Greek Organizations for charitable events and scholarships)
  • Community Organizations (Community centers)

Once the organization has all legal formalities out of the way, they will need to decide on a prize to be given away.  Most people love a monetary prize or a car.  For smaller organizations, trips and large screen televisions are always good.  Depending on the customer the organization is trying to make the sale to.  The organization may even offer more than one prize on their raffle ticket. (The organization needs to make sure they give themselves enough time for the raffle.  Usually a good raffle takes 2 weeks to get the raffle in order and get promotions out announcing that there will be a raffle; then another 3 weeks of selling up until the day of the raffle.)

The next step is the raffle ticket itself.  The organization will want a good quality raffle ticket made from A to Z Discount Printing.  A nice quality ticket always catches the eye of the customer.  If the ticket looks cheap, then most people will think that the raffle is a scam and may not purchase the ticket.  Make sure that the ticket has a place for the customer’s contact information just in case they win.  Organization may also use this information for future fundraisers.  Most times if someone is willing to help your organization out one time, they will normally do it again.  Again, check with your local government to see if the raffle ticket requires a number.  Some states require that all qualified raffle tickets consist of a numbering system.

There are many ways for an organization to promote and sell their raffle tickets.  The organization could host a dinner or luncheon that promotes participation.  If this is a team effort, then each person should be made responsible to sell at least two tickets.  The organization can make a contest out of it for the members, by giving a nice prize away to the person that sells the most tickets.  Also, the team members can do door to door sales in their communities, set up booths outside of store fronts (with the owner’s permission), carnivals, festivals and shows.  All of these are good avenues for drawing participation.

Online promotions are also a good way of promoting and selling raffle tickets by using social media as well as newspaper ads.  This avenue will allow you to reach a larger group of Supporters.

Raffles are fun and easy; the organization just needs to be well prepared in order to have an “Award Winning Raffle.”  And don’t forget to sell raffle tickets on the day of the raffle at the raffle.  Every ticket counts.
