Volunteers are the Key to Successful Raffle Ticket Sales by Bradley Clawson

Volunteers are the Key to Successful Raffle Ticket Sales by Bradley Clawson

Essay Topic:  Describe how non-profit organizations, (including church groups, civic groups and youth sports organizations) can best derive benefit for their fundraising effort by holding a raffle fundraiser.  Offer proposals for a) maximizing the sales of their raffle tickets b) prizes that would encourage and stimulate ticket sales c) suggested ways to motivate volunteers to sell more tickets.

I think that raffles are a good way to raise money for various groups or organizations.  I have been a part of many fundraisers throughout my life both for secular and religious purposes.  In my opinion, the best way to maximize the sale of raffle tickets is to go door to door and tell people about your fundraiser in person.  In my church, we do fundraisers all the time, especially for the youth so that they can do summer camps and things.  Our fundraisers have always done well because we get the whole community involved via the church and from going door to door.

The purpose of someone entering a raffle is not only to financially help whatever organization that is doing it, but it is also for the chance to win a prize.  In my experience, the best prizes that really stimulate the sale of tickets are family passes to things like the movies, a theme park, the zoo, etc.  If you can offer someone, typically an adult, a chance to win a prize that will benefit their whole family, then the chances of them participating in your raffle are greater.

Often it is difficult to get volunteers to work hard enough to sell enough tickets to make the raffle worthwhile.  An experience that I had with this was during my junior year in high school.  I was on the boy’s varsity soccer team and we did a team fundraiser in order to go to a far away soccer tournament that we wanted to participate in.  For our fundraiser, we sold community discount cards.  It was pretty hard to motivate the other guys to go door to door and try to sell those cards to their neighbors.  But, something that helped get them going was seeing how much money my brother and I made from taking a few hours out of one Saturday to go selling.  Obviously, there are many ways in which one can motivate volunteers to sell, but I think that some of the best ways to motivate are to have a common goal/interest/purpose in doing the fundraiser, see/show them successful examples of sales and provide incentives.

In conclusion, it is very difficult to get people to part with their money, especially in today’s society.  However, successful fundraisers are still possible for non-profit organizations, they just require more work than they used to.  Non-profit organizations can best derive benefit from holding a raffle fundraiser by providing good motivation/motivators for their volunteers to go out and sell tickets and by offering fun prizes for the entire family for the people buying the raffle tickets.  Doing these things will help maximize the sale of tickets and the fundraiser will have a greater chance of being successful for the organization.
