Raffles are one of the most efficient means of obtaining money for non-profits and other noble causes. Statistically speaking, an individual is much more likely to give their money to an organization if there is a probability of winning a prize for doing so. This transaction is one of mutual benefit; the organization is able to raise needed funds, and the person purchasing the ticket has the chance to win a desirable prize.

Although raffles with extravagant prizes such as expensive electronics tend to attract more people in a shorter amount of time, which is certainly valuable, smaller and more cost-effective prizes, such as gift cards, can have a similar, although subdued effect. Organizations who are in dire need of fundraising that represent a noble cause can also work with local businesses, potentially at a reduced cost in exchange for promotion as well as support from said group.

A rather simple way to maximize ticket sales lies in knowing the population that is most likely to buy tickets. For example, it would be rather unwise to start a raffle with the first prize being a gift card to a store that does not have a location close by. The best way to increase the chances of tickets being bought is to know the people that are potentially being sold these tickets. Even something as simple as a survey could make the difference between a success and a failure.

Another example can be seen with college students. If one wishes to hold a raffle in which the primary group purchasing these tickets would be college students, it may not be wise to have a car as a grand prize, as most on campus students would not have the need to commute on a daily basis. A better option could potentially be technology, such as a laptop, or a gift card to a store that specializes in such. This would be more ideal as most students in this modern age utilize technology on a daily basis for their courses, and many face issues with their electronics and would benefit from this raffle, which would in turn make them significantly more likely to purchase a ticket.

Many view the task of motivating volunteers to sell tickets as more daunting than it actually is. Although it can be difficult to encourage an already frustrated group, preemptive measures can avoid that issue altogether. Above all, volunteers will be the most motivated to try to sell tickets if they are passionate about the cause that they are representing. This means that it is imperative to ensure that the volunteers have a personal connection to their organization. That personal connection is strengthened by the way these volunteers are treated as a whole. If they are shown that their contributions are valued, and that their work does indeed have an impact on what it stands for, they are much more likely to work harder.

Another means to further motivate volunteers is to make sure that the volunteers themselves find the prize offered appealing. It is much easier to sell something if the merchant is genuinely excited about their product, and the same goes for selling raffle tickets. It is not only important to ensure that the prize offered is enticing to not only the potential group buying the tickets, but also to those selling said tickets.

While this advice is simple in nature, the difference made by following it is significant, and become the difference between a successful raffle and an unsuccessful one. Raffles can be an incredibly effective means of fundraising for a wide variety of groups. However, this fundraising, when done with all of the mentioned factors in mind, can be an incredible means to raise money for a variety of causes.
