In My Life
On the surface I think I am like most modern young Hispanic women; I take life seriously, I have dreams and goals for my future that I am determined to make happen. I don’t make excuses for myself and I don’t expect anyone to do the hard work for me. I come from what is an increasingly normal background. My parents had me at the age of 16 years old. My mother had to drop out of high school to care for me while my father was able to graduate high school but not able to further his education with attending college because a job was necessary for our survival.

For the most part, I grew up in a friendly and loving environment. Life was hard at first with many obstacles and challenges to overcome, it seemed like every day was a struggle. We lived in a rundown neighborhood and although it was not what we wanted, we had everything we needed. My parents did whatever necessary to see me succeed and thrive in all aspects of my life, reminding me every step of the way that my education was crucial to making a better future for myself. They’ve always been there to help me with anything that came my way. After a few years it seemed my family was just another statistic, my parents had never married and split up shortly after my first sister was born. I am the oldest out of four sisters, but we don’t all live together. I live with two of them and see the other two when possible. I lived with my mom most of my life, and she taught me that it does not matter what people think of you. Any negative thoughts or doubts others would have of me, my opinions of myself were the only ones that mattered. She taught me to be strong and independent in all that I do and most importantly to never give up on myself, even when everyone has given up on me. She has always been there to push me along and tell me I needed to finish what I started. Both of my parents have really shaped me into the person that I am today and I cannot thank them enough for all they have done, and continue to do for me as well as my other siblings. My dad has always been there when I would feel down. He has helped me in many ways to be more confident and not be so insecure and doubt myself when it came to my grades, goals and what I would like to accomplish for myself. He’s always been honest with me and would tell it like it is especially the many times I’ve needed a “reality check”. I am the first person in my family to pursue further education. I have had to overcome adversity to get this far, and am sure to face even more the farther along I go. Throughout my 18 years of short existence on this earth, I have learned not to take anything for granted because we don’t always get second chances. Furthering my education past my high school achievements will be a character-defining moment in my life. It will cause me to face many challenges but I have serious determination and I know I will do whatever it takes to succeed.

After carefully researching career options, being a nurse will fit my personality best and help me to fulfill my passion of helping others. I am certain that I possess the commitment and stamina to meet the challenge of your curriculum. This career path will be a challenging one, I have no doubt, but I intend to push through and achieve the goals I have set for myself. I am so glad to be able to share aspects of my life that are not apparent from my academic record as I feel my grades do not reflect all that I am capable of.

I am highly aware of the reputation of your school and I hope you will give me the privilege and opportunity of accomplishing my personal goals at your institution.
