Go Sell Some Raffle Tickets by Debra Steele

Go Sell Some Raffle Tickets by Debra Steele

Charity and community involvement is something that is near and dear to me.  I have attended and organized many fundraising events enough to earn the President’s Pin for Volunteerism.  I do not say this to impress you but to impress upon you that I know the methods for a successful event.  Any events I have been involved in include the use of raffle tickets in some shape or form.

First we must understand that the purpose for fundraising is to obtain funds to assist your charity or non-profit organization in achieving its goals.  These goals can range anywhere from raising money to buy groceries for the homeless; pay for postage to send items to deployed troops overseas; or buying toys for children that would otherwise have no Christmas; and the list goes on and on. Therefore, you do not want to spend a lot of money on fundraising events just to break even as that would defeat the purpose.

Although there are many good-hearted people in this world, let’s face it, most do not want to give without receiving something in return and it is getting harder and harder for non-profit organizations to meet the financial needs required to achieve their goals.  However, most people like the opportunity to win something no matter how big or small as it is the thrill of the “chance” to win that motivates them.

One of the most effective ways to do this is to sell raffle tickets.  This enables organizations to spend a limited amount on one or two prizes and then sell the “chance” to win through the use of the raffle tickets.  It gives you the best of both worlds by allowing your organization to keep cost down with no restrictions on the number of tickets sold.

Okay, so you have your raffle tickets, what’s next?  Remember you only get out of fundraising what you put into it, so how do you encourage your volunteers to sell, sell, sell?  Well, I have the answer for you.  You offer an incentive.  Keep in mind that you are trying to raise funds and not spend a lot doing it.  However, it costs you nothing to give free raffle tickets to the person that sells the most tickets or a prize for selling the winning ticket.  This will increase your ticket sells as your ticket sellers will being working to increase their “chance” at winning something.

Now you are almost finished planning a successful event.  You have your tickets and those ready and excited to sell but you have to get people to buy your tickets.  This is where your ticket pricing becomes important.  If you are selling raffle tickets for $5 per ticket, you can maximize sales by offering discounts for the more you buy (e.g. instead of $15 for three ($5 x 3) you could offer three for $12 thereby encouraging more tickets to be purchased).

That’s it; with the above you have what you need to have a successful fundraising event.  So, what are you waiting for?  GO SELL SOME RAFFLE TICKETS!
